Flag of the Republic of Brazil Pays Tribute to One Starry Night

Officially adopted in 1889, the flag of Brazil was inspired by the flag of the former Brazilian Empire, on which the colors of green and yellow represented the first empirical couple, Emperor Pedro I and Empress Leopoldina, and the Imperial Coat of Arms was predominate in the center of the flag.

While the green and yellow remains, the meanings have evolved. The deep green background now represents Brazil's lush fields and forests and the yellow stands for Brazil's mineral wealth. Gone is the old coat of arms, replaced by a floating blue celestial sphere with 27 white five-pointed stars (one for each state and one for the Federal District), arranged in the same pattern as the dark sky over Rio de Janeiro on the November 15, 1889, the day the Republic of Brazil was declared. Originally, there were 21 stars, but as new states were created, more stars were added. This 27-star version of the flag was adopted in 1992.

The sphere also has a white equatorial band emblazed with the motto Ordem e Progresso, which means "Order and Progress" in Portuguese, the national language of Brazil. The motto is reported to have been inspired by August Comte's motto of positivism: L'amour pour principe et l'ordre pour base; le progrès pour but ("Love as a principle and order as the basis; progress as the goal"). It was included because several people involved in the military coup d'etat that deposed the monarchy and were instrumental in Brazil becoming a republic were followers of the ideas of Comte's school of thought.
