Flag of Dominica
The current national flag of Dominica is one that has endured artistic amendments as well as political variances. This national symbol is based upon a design by a Dominican artist and playwright, Alwin Bully. Mr. Bully submitted his design into a flag competition in early 1978 in anticipation of Dominica gaining independence from Britain occurring later that year.
Alwin Bully created the first version of the current Dominica flag in early 1978. He describes his creation of the flag as such. The background of the flag is green representing the forest island. There is a cross comprised of three bands relaying a religious connotation, the Trinity of God. Each band represents aspects of the land and the ethnic origin of Dominica's people: yellow is for the sunshine, main agricultural products of the island at the time, citrus and bananas and the native Carib/Kalinago people, black for the soil and the African heritage, and the white represents the rivers and waterfalls of the island as well as the European influence.
Shortly after Alwin Bully's version of the Dominican flag went on display, the Dominican government made minor changes. One change made was the representation of the color white. Bully's original intention was the color white represented the rivers and waterfalls of the island and the European influence. The government felt differently and altered the white to represent, the clarity of our rivers and waterfalls and the purity of the aspirations of our people, with mention of the Europeans excluded. During the 1970s political ideology was to downplay the presence of Caucasians, thereby, eliminating mention of the Europeans with regard to the Dominican flag.
On November 3, 1981, another version of Dominican symbolism came to be. This time there was contention concerning, an enamel cannot lie against an enamel so that certain colors could not be next to one another. The flag that was displayed the night of the independence had bands in the order of black, yellow, white. The bands on the flag were changed to be yellow, black, and white. Another issue to be dealt with respect to enamels not lying against enamel was the stars on the flag. Initially the stars are red without an outline and were changed to have a yellow outline to separate the enamels.
Then another issue with the aesthetics of the flag occurred that was the positioning of the Sisserou parrot. On November 3, 1988, the most current version of the Dominican flag displayed had the Sisserou parrot facing the left rather than the right. There was not a steadfast rule as to which direction the bird should face, but it was decided the Sisserou parrot should always face the flagpole. Once again, there was an issue of political contention with respect to the red sun implying the connotation of socialism. By 1988, it simply represented the rising sun of independence.
