 Flag of Ecuador

The flag of Ecuador consists of three horizontal bands that from the top down are yellow, blue, and red. It has a striking resemblance to that of Colombia and Venezuela, because all three countries are former constituent territories of Gran Colombia. The three nations were under the names Guayaquil, Venezuela, and Nueva Granada to form the Great Colombia Republic in the 1820s and then adopted the Mirandinian-Venezuelan tricolor design. These three countries parted ways in 1830, yet retained the same flag created by Francisco de Miranda.

Symbolism and Meaning

The flag of Ecuador was based on a design that was created by Francisco de Miranda marking his unsuccessful expedition to liberate Venezuela. Miranda's inspiration to create Ecuador's flag came from a stimulating conversation with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Goethe was fascinated with Miranda's accounts of his exploits in the United States Revolutionary War and travels throughout the Americas and Europe told him that, "your destiny is to create in your land a place where primary colors are not distorted."This statement from Goethe was both artistic and philosophical.

Goethe went on to further his illustrate his statement to Miranda by explaining how the iris of the eye transforms light into three primary colors. The iris of the eye transforms light into three primary colors by yellow is the most warm, noble, and closest to white light, blue is a mix of serenity and excitement, red is the grandeur of yellow and blue. Then Miranda< took this idea and designed a flag for Ecuador.

The colors as they have meaning to the Ecuadorans are:

Yellow-wealth of agricultural and other resources in the country

Blue-the ocean and the clear skies

Red-the blood of those who died in wars for the country's freedom

The significance of the elements of the Coat of Arms is:

Condor-power and courage

Landscape-Chimborazo and Guayas River

Boat (the Guayas) with a caduceus mast-accord and trade

Golden Sun-pre-Colombian traditions

Zodiac Signs-the Marxist Revolution

Palm and Laurel leaves-peace and dignity

History

There are eight identifiable periods in the history of the history of Ecuador's flag.

1810-12: The leaders of a rebellion against the Spanish authorities raised a red flag with a white mast. The flag fell in the bloody hands of Samano in 1812.

1820-1822: A flag with five horizontal stripes and three stars on the middle stripe symbolized Guayaquil, Portoviejo, and Machala, was raised by the patriots in the October 9, 1820 Liberation. This design is now the flag of the province of Guayas.

1822: The afore mentioned flag was altered by decree on June 2, 1822: "The flag of the free province of Guayaquil shall be white and its first quarter blue with a centered star (no color indicated for the star)."

1822-1845: Ecuador was included into Greater Colombia, during which time the horizontal colors of the flag became conclusive.

1845: During the Marxist Revolution the blue/white flag makes a comeback, but as a vertical tricolor of white, blue, white, with three white stars in the center stripe.

1845-1860: The Cuenca Convention varied the flag by decree on November 6, 1845 to alter the shade of blue to be deeper to resemble Ecuador's sky and increase the number of stars from three to seven to signify "the seven provinces that make up the republic."

1860-1900: Upon Gabriel Garcia Moreno's victory over the forces of Castilla, Franco, and the Treaty of Mapasingue, he ordered that, "the bicolor has been shamed out of treason and bears a wash proof stain. Let the old Ecuadorian flag, sealed with heroes'blood be forever consecrated as the peoples'ensign and the pride of our national glories."

1900-Present: The flag reintroduced by Moreno became absolute in 1900, and the coat of arms was added for official nation use. It is comprised of three colors yellow, blue, and red in horizontal stripes, with yellow being predominant having double width of the other two colors.
