French Tricolor Adopted in 1794 After the French Revolution
The national flag of France is a tricolor featuring three vertical bands of blue, white and red. First used in 1789 after the French Revolution, the flag wasn't officially adopted until February 15, 1794.
The colors of the flag are believed to be derived from those of Paris (blue and red) combined with that of the Bourbon Dynasty (white) and usually associated with liberty, equality and fraternity - the ideals of the French Revolution.
It is sometimes stated that the colors may also reflect the three main estates - the clergy being white, the nobility red and the bourgeoisie blue - of the "Former Regime" in France, referring to the aristocratic social and political system in place during the days prior to the revolution.
Other flags flown in France include the red spiked "oriflamme" banner or "Flag of St. Denis" used in the Middle Ages, a blue banner with gold fleurs-de-lis bordered in red represented the House of Valois later in the Middle Ages and a flag with a white cross on either a red or blue field was popular during the Hundred Years War. The white cross on a blue field is still seen on some flags derived from it, such as the flags of Quebec or Martinique.
